Police have accused four people of raping 11 female students at an Islamic school in Depok, West Java.
The suspects are listed as three Astase (Teachers of Islamic Studies) A senior in the school.
The legal representative of three of their 11 alleged victims filed a complaint with the Jakarta Metro Police in late June, prompting an official investigation. The three girls allege that they were raped by suspects on numerous occasions over the past year.
They told their parents when they recently came home for a school vacation.
“Now our team is acting proactively by going to the other victims,” said Indra Zulpan, a spokesman for Jakarta Metro Police. He saidHe said testimony from the other eight alleged victims was needed to make a stronger case against the suspects.
This case is similar to that of Heri Wirawan, who was convicted of raping 13 of his students, aged between 16 and 17, on various occasions in 2016 in a number of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) where he taught. His victims bore 9 children.
In April, Heri was sentenced to death on appeal, making this sentence one of the harshest sentences ever handed down by a court on a person convicted of child molestation in Indonesia. Under Indonesian law, child rapists are generally punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison.
