Did you know that 50-75% of adults have at least one headache each year? Of these, nearly 30% reported migraines. Up to 4% of the world’s population experiences headaches for 15 or more days each month.
While most people focus on treating a headache after it occurs, we’d like to offer some preventive tips to help you prevent a headache from starting in the first place. In fact, we have helped many patients cope with headaches and migraines naturally through intensive and gentle chiropractic care.
Here are some tips for overcoming some of the most common types of headaches.
Cluster headache: Cluster headaches are one of the most painful types of headaches, are usually felt on one side of the head near the eyes and last an average of 30 to 90 minutes. If you are prone to cluster headaches, possible triggers may include bright lights, foods containing nitrates such as deli meats, sudden rises, and alcohol or smoking. Try to avoid these triggers to see if your headache improves.
You have a headache: This type of headache does not always throb, but feels like tightness or tenderness in the head and neck. To prevent tension headaches, note what you did right before the headache occurred. Sometimes stress is a trigger, so doing regular mindfulness or breathing exercises may help.
Migraine: Most research on migraines indicates that environmental factors, hormones, and genes are the main triggers. Making sure you stay hydrated, avoiding foods high in salt, and sticking to a regular sleep schedule may help reduce their frequency. Other triggers may include bright fluorescent lights and strong odors.
